Honoring Stephen Goldberg: A Remarkable Musician and Playwright

We are saddened to announce the passing of Stephen Goldberg, a talented trumpet and flugelhorn player who frequently performed at the Venetian Soda Lounge. Stephen passed away at the age of 85 in Colchester, Vermont.

Stephen's journey in music began in his early teens, inspired by his older brother. Saying he thought it "was cool". He honed his craft at the Manhattan School of Music and went on to play backup for legendary artists such as Stevie Wonder, Little Richard, and Chuck Berry.

His musical career took him to Vermont, where he served as the musical director for Nimbus Dance during a residency at Johnson State College. It was there he met his future wife, folk singer-songwriter Rachel Bissex. Rachel was an inspiration to some of Stephen's most heartfelt works.

In addition to his impressive musical achievements, Stephen was a prolific playwright. He co-founded Burlington’s Off Center for the Dramatic Arts, a venue dedicated to staging experimental theater. His works often explored the lives of society’s misfits, blending dark humor with poignant storytelling. Notable plays such as "Burning Bridges," "Waiting for Angels," and "Screwed" showcase his unique voice and perspective.

Stephen's influence extended beyond his music and plays. He was a mentor and inspiration to many in the Burlington arts community. His ability to blend music, movement, and drama created unforgettable experiences for audiences. Even in his later years, Stephen continued to perform and compose, collaborating with various musicians and contributing to the vibrant cultural scene.

We were honored to have Stephen perform at the Venetian Soda Lounge. His passion for music and dedication to his craft were evident in every performance, leaving a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of listening.

Last year, we had the pleasure of producing a promotional video with Stephen for one of his performances at our lounge. This video features an interview with Stephen, where he shared insights about his journey and his passion for music, along with a captivating performance.
